Writing Wrongs

Did you know that the phrase, “there’s a sucker born every minute” was never officially attributed to P.T. Barnum?

However, ask any person on the street and 9 times out of 10, they will attribute that saying to Mr. Barnum. Myself included. (Hey, it’s a great quote, no matter who actually said it.)

Is it possible? Is this the First example of a post-truth in the pre-millennium?

Early on, during the primaries, Trump was compared to Mr. Barnum as a ‘showman’, a populist, opportunist, et al… Yet, there is no real comparison beyond the fact that both men were in entertainment. It is not fair to the memory of Mr. Barnum* (P.T. Barnum was far kinder and more personable) to compare them. Even still, I ponder whether, during his lifetime, P.T. Barnum would have ever been a viable or even successful political candidate for president, let alone considered it as an option.

For the next seven days, you will see a series of FACT-BASED and SOURCE-CHECKED anti-trump slash trump-less propaganda mixed in with my regular posts (if it works out). I will return to regular programming next Saturday.

I truly believe that the Electoral College is the last vestige of hope to prevent a dictatorship slash tyrannical rule. I cling to that hope because, really, our forefathers had only the slightest concept of a dictatorship, and that concept was The Crown – which is still in power today and nowhere near as terrifying as what is chomping at the bit to be in control of our country now.

If the 3-state recounts pan out… then ooh-rah, Dr. Stein… until then… we work with what he have… Personally, I think that they need to look further back… to the primary elections… but… who am I? Meanwhile, all the people that endorsed him, get their recompense.

If you do not understand why I am opposed to a Trump presidency, I will pray for you… until then… keep an eye on Mr. Trump. His sleight-of-words is deceiving. When he tells you to look at his right hand, be sure to watch his left – along with whatever his people are doing behind and around him…

My mother-in-law (God rest her soul) was a devout Christian and was fond of saying, “We come to the Lord as children…”

My tart response was (and I account for it every day) that… “Well, a child will run out into traffic after a bouncing ball…”

What, what? Exactly, my crickets.

Moving on…

Here’s the link to the REAL electoral vote information:

They say, AND I quote:

“Today, it is rare for Electors to disregard the popular vote by casting their electoral vote for someone other than their party’s candidate. Electors generally hold a leadership position in their party or were chosen to recognize years of loyal service to the party. Throughout our history as a nation, more than 99 percent of Electors have voted as pledged.”

Okay… that is an infinite loop of freaking logic.

Let’s parse it:

“Today, it is rare for Electors to disregard the popular vote by casting their electoral vote for someone other than their party’s candidate.”

Okay… enter the freaking white board. Attempt 1:

What the hell… dang it… the for goes on the top this time, right? Geez… what is the Subject of this sentence???

And this is why English was only my minor. Holy Hell… I was up until 3:30am trying to parse this! And, sadly enough, I think some part of me enjoyed it… or, well, at least completely forgot that the rest of the world existed. *sigh*

Here’s the takeaway from my mad divergence into sentence diagramming…

There is hope, because, the general inference of that statement is this:

“It is rare for Electors to disregard the popular vote.”

Hmm… so the popular vote was expected to align with the electoral allotments? Interesting…

That is literally where the main idea/thought ends though… and then… there’s this freaking prepositional (adverbial) phrase, “by casting…”

What the hell. Are you saying?

Just say what you mean!

Um… isn’t that what electoral voters do? Cast ballots, in each state? Per the will of the Governor?

What the hell…

Oh….the hell with it… just sign the petition, have a final say for posterity.

Because the alternative is… deplorable. If he is sworn in, it will be a long and arduous 4 years.

Thank you for your time.

Electoral Voters… You have the power to follow the popular vote. Vote your conscience. Because, when the votes are counted, we will know where you stand.

*Rest In Peace, Mr. Barnum.
